A massive box office clash is brewing, and the first numbers are in with a shocking result. In the United States, the Rajinikanth starrer Coolie has taken a huge and unexpected lead in advance ticket sales over the much-awaited spy thriller War 2, which stars Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR.
With both films set to release in just over a week, this early trend has caught the film industry by surprise and set the stage for an intense battle at the box office.
A Shocking 6X Lead
With nine days still to go, the numbers show a surprising gap between the two films in the North American market. Coolie has already sold a phenomenal $1.2 million worth of tickets in advance bookings. In sharp contrast, War 2 has collected $205,000 so far from its Hindi and Telugu versions combined. This gives the Rajinikanth film a lead that is nearly six times bigger than its competitor. This trend isn’t just in the US; reports suggest Coolie is also leading in other overseas markets like Australia and New Zealand.
Why This Is A Surprise
This news is a big shock to many because War 2 comes from the very successful YRF Spy Universe and was made on a much bigger budget. It was expected to have a huge opening. The most surprising detail is that the Telugu-dubbed version of Coolie (a Tamil film) has sold more tickets ($200,000) than the original Telugu version of War 2 ($155,000). This is unusual because the US market is usually dominated by Telugu audiences.
War 2‘s Uphill Battle
The early sales for the Hindi version of War 2 ($50,000) are also said to be slow, trailing behind other recent Bollywood blockbusters. As the release date gets closer, all eyes will be on War 2 to see if it can gain speed and catch up. The film will need a major boost in the next nine days to make a strong impact in the international markets.
