Madoka Magica Walpurgisnacht: Rising Movie Confirms 2026 Release After Two Year Delay

After a lengthy and uncertain wait, fans of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica finally have a firm release date for the upcoming movie of the franchise.

The official website for the series announced on July 15, 2025 that Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising is now scheduled to premiere in February 2026.

The announcement was accompanied by a new trailer and key visual for the movie. Check them out below:

The latest update marks the end of a protracted series of delays for the movie, which serves as a direct sequel to the 2013 film Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie Part 3: Rebellion.

The film was originally slated for a winter 2024 release. However, on August 16, 2024, the production committee announced a delay to winter 2025, citing “production circumstances” and stating, “We are continuing our efforts to deliver a better work.”

This new February 2026 release date for the Madoka Magica movie, pushes the film’s debut back by approximately two years from its initial target.

Despite the extended production schedule, the film is reuniting the acclaimed staff from the original 2011 TV series and previous films. Studio SHAFT will once again handle animation production. The core creative team includes:

  • Original Creators: Magica Quartet
  • Chief Director: Akiyuki Simbo
  • Director: Yukihiro Miyamoto
  • Script: Gen Urobuchi (Nitroplus)
  • Original Character Designer: Ume Aoki
  • Animation Character Designer: Junichirō Taniguchi
  • Composer: Yuki Kajiura
  • Alternate Space Designer: Gekidan Inu Curry

The original Japanese voice cast is also confirmed to be returning to reprise their roles, continuing the story from Rebellion. The returning cast includes:

  • Aoi Yuki as Madoka Kaname
  • Chiwa Saito as Homura Akemi
  • Kaori Mizuhashi as Mami Tomoe
  • Eri Kitamura as Sayaka Miki
  • Ai Nonaka as Kyoko Sakura
  • Kana Asumi as Nagisa Momoe
  • Emiri Kato as Kyubey

Puella Magi Madoka Magica first aired in 2011, deconstructing the magical girl genre with its dark, psychological themes. The story follows a group of middle school girls who are granted wishes in exchange for becoming magical girls tasked with fighting monstrous beings known as witches.

The original 12-episode series was followed by three films: Beginnings and Eternal, which recap the series, and Rebellion, which continued the story with a new conclusion.
