A Marvel/Star Wars crossover might finally become a reality. With rumors continuing to circulate that Marvel Comics is finally going to pull the trigger, it’s actually quite remarkable that combining the Marvel Universe and the Star Wars galaxy hasn’t already been done before.
First reported by Bleeding Cool, it’s been rumored that comic book legend Mark Millar may be working on a Marvel/Star Wars crossover event in secret. Here’s why something like a non-canon Star Wars vs Avengers crossover actually makes perfect sense.
A Marvel/Star Wars Crossover Has Been Heavily Rumored From Mark Millar
Ahead of ComicsPRO next week (where Marvel and DC’s recent crossover comics were first announced), it’s been rumored that a major announcement is in the works for a Star Wars/Marvel crossover from Mark Millar (Civil War, Kingsman, Kick-Ass).
Considering Disney owns both franchises, and the fact that Marvel has been publishing canonical Star Wars comics since 2015, it’s honestly surprising it hasn’t happened already, and the possibilities are incredibly exciting.
Imagine Iron Man taking on Darth Vader, or lightsabers pitted against Captain America’s shield. Would certain heroes like Spider-Man be revealed as Force-sensitive? Even smaller characters like Jeff the Land Shark meeting Grogu could be lots of fun. Additionally, Marvel Comics has proven its ability to provide compelling crossover stories beyond just dumping the toy boxes together.
Why A Marvel/Star Wars Crossover Can Work (An Established Track Record)
Without a doubt, a Marvel/Star Wars crossover would naturally exist outside both universes’ respective canons. Furthermore, Marvel has already proven its ability to make some great non-canon crossovers with other properties (and not just with DC Comics).
Recent crossovers include Godzilla, Planet of the Apes, Alien, and the Predator franchises. Jonathan Hickman’s Aliens vs Avengers notably showed how epic and compelling these events can truly be. As such, something along those same lines from Millar could be absolutely fascinating.
Some more good reasons: a Marvel/Star Wars crossover likely generate a whole wave of new readers, while also giving Marvel Comics a brand-new Star Wars project to publish (their current flagship Star Wars series is set to end next week).
Last but not least, a Marvel/Star Wars crossover would hilariously pay off Patton Oswalt’s legendary Parks and Rec filibuster from 2013 where he pitched a crossover for the movies (if you haven’t seen it, please go watch it on YouTube). Time will tell if these rumors are true (but man, do I hope they are).
