If you’re making a Sourav Ganguly biopic, you do not fake the roar. The latest buzz around the much-awaited sports drama is all about scale and authenticity, with the makers lining up two of cricket’s most sacred addresses to recreate defining moments from Ganguly’s career.
With Rajkummar Rao stepping into the former India captain’s shoes, the film is gearing up to move from prep to pitch-ready production, and the locations alone tell you the team is aiming for a premium, big-screen spectacle.
Latest Update: Lord’s And Eden Gardens Set As Key Shoot Venues
Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that the Sourav Ganguly biopic, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and produced by Luv Films’ Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg, is set to go on floors in March, with Lord’s Cricket Ground in London and Eden Gardens in Kolkata identified as primary locations.
A source close to the development says, “Makers have identified Lord’s and Eden Gardens as key locations to authentically recreate defining chapters from Ganguly’s cricket career. Lord’s, often referred to as the Mecca of Cricket, holds historic significance in Ganguly’s journey and hence makers have decided to shoot at the real locations.”
The plan is expansive, spanning multiple cities and continents. As per the same source, “Motwane and Luv Films are keen on mounting the biopic on a grand scale. Shooting at the real locations was always part of the vision. Permissions are being worked out, and the team plans to begin filming in March at various locations like Kolkata, Mumbai and London.”
Rao, known for disappearing into real-life parts, has already started preparation for the role and is expected to undergo intensive cricket training to portray Ganguly’s on-field style. The film is being positioned as a full-bodied chronicle of the cricketer’s impact, tracking both the big innings and the larger leadership arc that reshaped Indian cricket’s swagger era.
Rajkummar Rao’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Rajkummar Rao has been in a high-visibility phase over the past four years, balancing commercial franchises with character-driven turns. His biggest recent theatrical success is Stree 2 (2024), the Amar Kaushik-directed horror comedy sequel that became a massive box office blockbuster with a reported worldwide gross of Rs 874.58 crore.
He followed that with the sports drama Mr. & Mrs. Mahi (2024), directed by Sharan Sharma and co-starring Janhvi Kapoor, and the fantasy romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf (2025), directed by Karan Sharma and featuring Wamiqa Gabbi and Seema Pahwa.
Rajkummar Rao’s last release Maalik (2025), a Pulkit-directed action crime drama backed by Tips Films and Northern Lights Films was a big disaster. He is also set to headline a biopic on public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, which began filming in October 2025 and is being targeted for a 2026 release window.
