Wakana and Marin

The happiest girl in the world.

Two of my favorite anime this season are Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru Season 2 (My Dress-Up Darling Season 2) and Yofukashi no Uta Season 2 (Call of the Night Season 2). It’s not surprising to me at all that I enjoy My Dress-Up Darling 2 so much considering the first season was my top show of Winter 2022, but I think I enjoy Call of the Night more now than I ever have. In both cases, a significant part of the appeal comes how each anime presents itself, independent of all the other stuff (y’know, like characters or plot) that normally make a story good. Certainly, My Dress-Up Darling always excelled at visually communicating its characters’ feelings.

The moon is beautiful?

Call of the Night, though, has always been the sort of property that I’ve appreciated, but I often felt as though was on the verge of disliking for unclear reasons. For example, I stopped reading the manga relatively early simply because I didn’t feel like reading more even though it’s probably not entirely correct to claim I got tired of it. Maybe I did, but I feel as if there ought to be a better way of saying that. As far as the first (Summer 2022) anime goes, I enjoyed it, but didn’t know how much I necessarily cared about its growing supporting cast of characters.

I’m starting to think you’re not a nice lady.

Now, nearly midway though the second Yofukashi no Uta season, I’m reasonably confident I can say it doesn’t really matter how much I care about its supporting characters. Rather, I like the anime mostly because of its A T M O S P H E R E or something. This means I’m probably not going to be able to effectively tell you what makes the second season so good, at least not in a low-effort three-paragraph blog post. You’ll just have to trust me that its combination of wide-angle shots, Sawashiro Miyuki chewing the scenery, and effective use of vaguely unsettling color palettes combine to produce some nifty television.
