Last weekend, we travelled east to watch Peckham Town Football Club take on Sporting Club Thamesmead, walking up from Abbey Wood station to the ground (see photos from the game here).
It made for an interesting walk with the path taking us past rows of 1960s social housing, around a lake surrounded by new build high rise developments and under a graffiti sprayed flyover.
A welcoming message in Abbey Wood.
Rows and rows of 60s architecture.
Thamesmead was built as “a town for the 21st century” but which was soon plagued by social problems caused by lack of facilities and public transport.
This fascinating archive film shows how the dream was envisioned:
Approaching Southmere lake.
The lake seemed pleasant enough to us, but there’s some scathing reviews on Tripadvisor:
We are foreign family living over 20 years in London. I can tell there was anger and discrimination, including words F….
Saw a million condoms laying about and tons of drug parephenalia in the hedges etc…
I was “Warned off” very unpleasant bloke, if I hadn’t have had my 10 year old daughter with me I’d have given ‘Dangerous Dave’ a severe talking to :-
Housing blocks looking over the lake,
The walk to the ground takes you under the A2016.
