Assassin’s Creed Fans Torn Over Cancelled Game

While the Assassin’s Creed franchise is still alive and kicking, it may not be as big as it once was as far as spinoffs and mobile entries are concerned.

According to French gaming site Origami, it appears at least one Assassin’s Creed game could be canceled. This is allegedly in addition to the recent mass restructuring at the studio.

An Assassin’s Creed Game Has Seemingly Been Canceled

In case you haven’t heard, Ubisoft officially canceled six games, including the long-awaited Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake. It was a brutal announcement, and the only concrete info we had at the time was that Prince of Persia was canned, and that one of the other five canceled titles was a mobile game. Now, we’re getting potential info on games that were canceled beyond that scope.

According to Origami’s report, the game is allegedly called Assassin’s Creed League and was a co-op game that started life as a multiplayer expansion for the Japan-based Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. Apparently, development shifted into a “smaller” standalone co-op title, but still using zones from Shadows. While invite-only alpha tests were apparently scheduled for May 2026, the game may be canceled altogether.

If this pans out, it shows that Ubisoft isn’t particularly happy with many of its side projects. Mainline Assassin’s Creed games tend to sell (despite how they are perceived critically), but not every expansion, side mode, or extra project is a success. We could see a slimming down of a few big IPs at the publisher in the coming years to focus on what works.

We Need Another Multiplayer AC

While the narrative and protagonist-swapping mechanics of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows didn’t enamor everyone, another game set in the same time period seems like a win. The standalone multiplayer nature of Assassin’s Creed League ensures that it’s not entwined with what should ostensibly be a single-player mainline series, and fans who weren’t interested could easily skip it.

Plus, we’ve waited so long for an Assassin’s Creed game set in Japan. Fans want to see what the team can do with the setting beyond Shadows. There’s limitless potential for multiple other games to be set in the same time period. Not to mention, there are fans of Assassin’s Creed multiplayer, which made its big debut in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood in 2010. Ghost of Tsushima introduced a wonderful multiplayer element in an update as well, so there’s plenty of hunger for another similar experience.

Whatever Ubisoft decides for the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, the mainline games will remain the core attraction. It’s clear that side projects will likely be trimmed or eliminated across multiple Ubisoft franchises.
