Green Fingers at West Farm Care Centre

At West Farm Care Centre, the greenhouse has become a cherished haven where residents come together to nurture plants, share gardening wisdom, and enjoy the simple pleasure of watching life grow. Tucked away in a sunny corner of the garden, the greenhouse is now bursting with greenery thanks to the care and dedication of its resident gardeners.

Inside, rows of thriving cucumbers climb their supports, fresh herbs release their fragrant aromas, and potatoes nestle in soil-filled tubs, waiting to be harvested. Residents take pride in watering, pruning, and checking on their crops daily, often swapping tips and stories from their own gardening days.

The greenhouse offers more than just fresh produce. It provides a sense of purpose, routine, and joy. Gardening is a gentle, therapeutic activity that encourages movement, stimulates the senses, and fosters connection. Whether it’s the feel of soil between fingers or the excitement of spotting a new sprout, every moment spent in the greenhouse is meaningful.

Staff support residents in their gardening efforts, ensuring tools are accessible and tasks are tailored to individual abilities. It’s a team effort, with everyone contributing in their own way. Some plant seeds, others label pots, and many simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and camaraderie.

The fruits (and vegetables!) of their labour are often used in the kitchen, adding homegrown flavour to meals and sparking conversations around the dinner table. There’s something special about tasting a cucumber you’ve helped grow or sprinkling fresh basil on your pasta.
