Grand Theft Auto 6 and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis are both scheduled to be released this year, and both of them could be targeting a late 2026 release date. Exactly when the original Tomb Raider remake will launch is currently unknown, but an October release window is possible due to the significance of Tomb Raider’s 30th anniversary on October 24.
It’s also possible that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis could launch this summer, but a recent post on Twitter/X makes it seem far less likely. Unless Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis releases hastily this summer or accepts a delay into 2027, it’ll ultimately have to contend with Grand Theft Auto 6 this holiday season.
Tomb Raider Doesn’t Stand A Chance
Intriguingly, this post declares that “more on Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will be revealed this year.” The wording here is peculiar and worrying, as it seems obvious and arguably unnecessary to state that news of the remake will come “this year” if it is intended to be released in 2026.
Therefore, a delay may be imminent to announce that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will be released in 2027, not 2026. Despite the previous confidence in a 2026 release window for the game, one valid reason for a delay would be to distance its release from that of Grand Theft Auto 6.
GTA 6 Is Eclipsing Anything Near It
Because Grand Theft Auto 6’s release date has been confirmed, doubled down on, and reiterated recently, it seems likely that the currently scheduled November 19 release date is here to stay. There’s always a chance that it could be delayed unceremoniously, of course, but a marketing campaign this summer and a launch this holiday season seem relatively concrete.
As such, no game, be it an indie title or a AAA behemoth, is going to want to be in its blast zone. Launching in November, let alone at the end of November, will be a massive risk for any other title, and even any hypothetical games with a proposed December window should be wary that they’ll be overshadowed by Rockstar’s massive new release.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis may be the first notch in a striking and thrilling new era for the Tomb Raider franchise. However, it won’t hold a candle to Grand Theft Auto 6 in the market, especially if it decides to launch in or around November.
October would be a phenomenal and nostalgic month for the remake to be released, but it also poses a tremendous risk to Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis‘s retention of its playerbase. While an October release could give players plenty of time to enjoy the remake before Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives, the conversation wouldn’t be white-hot for long.
