Chinatsu and Taiki

Tell her she looks nice, you idiot.

I skipped Ao no Hako (Blue Box) when it aired during the Autumn 2024 anime season, but picked it up recently because Nii Manabu kept posting about it and because its second cours continued to run without interruption in Winter 2025. I don’t know if I’ll catch up with the current episodes, but it’s a pretty good anime so far. In fact, Ao no Hako is so good that I have to grudgingly admit I like the individual episodes even when they prominently feature the irksome hangups of Taiki, the male lead, on a regular basis.

Taiki and his mother Yukiko

“Lower.”

Taiki is at least not a generic Potato-kun-type protagonist, but I’m also not exactly rooting for his success. Taiki doing fuck all with his infatuation with Chinatsu, a basketball player who’s a year older than him, has been the main focus of the episodes I’ve watched so far. However, Hina, a childhood friend, has been looming as a potential complication. She is surely interested in him, so I’m expecting love-triangle hijinks ahead of me.

Hina

I don’t know if Hina is Best Girl, but she’s Better Girl.

It’s probably not the greatest compliment to Blue Box to say it’s a good anime even though I don’t really care if Taiki gets together with Chinatsu (or with Hina, for that matter). Maybe I’m optimistic that I’ll actually start rooting for Taiki’s romantic success at some point, even though he’s mostly been a putz so far. That might be too optimistic, though. I’m better off hoping for his badminton matches to start featuring the sort of mad trash talking I loved in Hanebado!, probably
