‘Percy Jackson’ Author Reveals How Season 2 Had to Change After the Death of Lance Reddick

When Percy Jackson and the Olympians returns for Season 2 this December, a lot of things will be different. One of them will be the hardest for fans to deal with, though. Back in 2023, Lance Reddick died at 61 years old, meaning that his role of Zeus in the Disney+ series would have to be recast at some point. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, franchise creator Rick Riordan commented about moving forward without Reddick and how it felt to see Courtney B. Vance (Lilo & Stitch) embody the god of Olympus in the new season.

During the interview, Riordan and Percy Jackson showrunners Craig Silverstein and Jonathan E. Steinberg revealed that they almost made the decision to not have any Zeus scenes in Season 2 and put off the difficult task of recasting Reddick. However, it looks like they did not regret going ahead and seeing what a different actor might be able to bring to the important role. Riordan didn’t mince words when praising Vance’s work in the new episodes. He stated:

“Courtney’s incredible. Like so much casting, it was just fortuitous that we got the right person at the right time. I’m so delighted and so grateful that he was able to step in. Zeus being the king of the Gods, he’s important, but he doesn’t show up on screen a lot, but it’s important when he does because he has such gravitas. And Courtney did a great job with it, so we lucked out.”

Who Is Zeus in ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Season 2?

The new actor to embody the Greek god is Courtney B. Vance, who starred in a slate of important movies such as The Hunt for Red October, Space Cowboys, and Dangerous Minds. On TV, he starred in over 100 episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and was also in the cast of Lovecraft Country and, most recently, 61st Street and Grotesquerie. Fans of the Percy Jackson novel series know why Zeus’ participation in Season 2 of the series is so important – without spoiling anything, it has to do directly with one of the pupils from Camp Half-Blood.

This is an important month for Percy Jackson, since the series started production this month on Season 3. So, when Season 2 inevitably ends up in a massive cliffhanger, fans know that the story will keep going and loose threads will be picked up.

Disney+ debuts Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians in December. A specific release date is yet to be unveiled.
