Roblox Sued Over Child Safety After Teen’s Suicide

Roblox has received another lawsuit dealing with child safety, adding to a pile of legal concerns that’s been growing quickly this year. As a major gaming platform with a significant number of children in its player base, Roblox has received intense scrutiny regarding its protections for its youngest users.

This article contains discussion of sensitive topics like suicide and child predation.

California mother Becca Dallas has now sued Roblox over the death of her son, as reported by the New York Times. Several years ago, her son Ethan Dallas was contacted over Roblox by a user named Nate, likely a 37-year-old man named Timothy O’Connor. Four months after telling his mother about the situation, Ethan committed suicide in April 2024.

Becca Dallas’s lawsuit accuses Roblox of wrongful death, alleging that a lack of proper child safety protections ultimately led to her son’s suicide. Nate walked Ethan through disabling Roblox parental controls. Eventually, Nate convinced Ethan to move their communication off the platform and onto Discord, where he pushed him to send messages of a sexual nature.

Alexandra Walsh, a partner at the law firm handling the case, notes that the case seeks to avoid being blocked by the protections of the Community Decency Act’s Section 230. This has been used to absolve companies of responsibility for content on their online platforms, but the suit focuses on the lack of protections rather than content itself.

This lawsuit follows in the wake of a recent suit by the Attorney General of Louisiana, who filed against Roblox on the basis of inadequate age verification processes. In late August and early September, Roblox made several announcements involving new age restriction standards and a more comprehensive rollout of age verification technology.

Concerns Surrounding Roblox Continue To Grow

Dallas’s lawsuit highlights how serious Roblox‘s child safety issues are, exemplifying the kind of damage that a lack of proper protection can cause. Along with the suit, Dallas started a mental health scholarship foundation in her son’s name, known as Ethan Dallas Hopeful Hearts.

Variety published a statement from a Roblox spokesperson, which shares that the company “is deeply saddened by this tragic, unimaginable loss” but notes that it “cannot comment on claims raised in litigation.” The statement reiterates Roblox‘s claims of targeting “the highest safety standards” and “stricter policies than other platforms.

According to Roblox‘s spokesperson, the company has not yet been served with the lawsuit. It may take some time before Roblox is able to find a path through its current legal troubles. Meanwhile, a Change.org petition to remove Roblox‘s CEO over child safety concerns has reached 280,000 signatures, highlighting just how extensive the backlash is.
