What If These Roles Were Based in Ireland?

Founded in 2010, Buffer is a globally distributed technology company operating remotely for over a decade. It publicly shares salary bands, financial performance, and even profit-sharing results through its Open Dashboard (https://buffer.com/open).

In 2025 alone, Buffer generated $2.5m in net income and distributed $377,005 in profit share to 75 teammates – its second-largest distribution to date.

Importantly, Buffer already employs two people in Ireland. There is precedent.

So what would the impact be if these six live roles were based here?

Income Imported into Ireland

Using the lower end of each salary band and converting USD → EUR at €0.92:

~€860,800 in annual gross income

This is foreign-earned income landing directly into Ireland without relocating the firm or requiring state subsidy (not that it wouldn’t help).

Tax Contribution

Applying standard Irish PAYE, USC and PRSI rates (single worker, no pension modelling etc etc), these specific six roles would generate approximately:

~€300,000+ per year in direct income-related tax
(or ~€400,000+ including employer PRSI)

Six jobs. Circa €0.4m annually in taxation.

Local Economic Impact

According to the Central Statistics Office Household Budget Survey, roughly 65% of net income is spent domestically.

Estimated combined net income across the six roles: ~€504,500.

Applying the 65% local spend rate:

~€328,000 per year injected into local Irish economies

This recurring demand supports childcare, retail, hospitality, utilities, trades and community services.

Climate Impact

Using CSO Census 2022 commuting data and conservative transport emission assumptions:

Per remote worker (annual):

  • 7,728 km of commuting avoided
  • 223 hours of commuting time saved
  • 1.081 tonnes CO₂ avoided from commuting
  • 0.552 tonnes CO₂ household increase (heating, energy use)
  • 0.076 tonnes CO₂ desk power avoided
  • Net CO₂ avoided: 0.605 tonnes per worker per year

For 6 Remote Roles

  • Total km saved: 46,368 km per year
  • Total time saved: 1,339 hours per year
  • Commute emissions avoided: 6.49 tonnes CO₂
  • Household energy increase: 3.31 tonnes CO₂
  • Net total CO₂ avoided: 3.63 tonnes per year

Equivalent to approximately 57 return flights between Dublin and London.

Remote work reduces transport emissions immediately, without new infrastructure or public capital expenditure.

Community Contribution

Buffer operates a four-day workweek. If each worker volunteers just two hours per week across 48 weeks, that equates to:

576 hours of annual community contribution

Equivalent to 14 full-time working weeks of civic capacity each year.

One the Buffer Ireland employees already volunteers and we are very grateful that Mick supports us as a local leader to help build community in Wexford.

Why Ireland Should Engage Remote-First Employers

Companies like Buffer represent a new category of globally distributed employer. They require no industrial parks or capital relocation – only talent, clarity and engagement.

Ireland already has the skills and infrastructure. What we need now is a target and a commitment to the joined up thinking that will shape how remote-native firms scale in Ireland and with Ireland.

Landing even a small number of high-value remote roles each year compounds into meaningful regional economic impact.

These six roles show what is possible.

The opportunity is real and it is live!

More jobs like these can and should land in Ireland.
