Ahead of season 5’s arrival, Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard reveals his spinoff prediction for the growing franchise that turned out to be right. Stranger Things season 5 is right around the corner, but the franchise is also set to expand with spinoffs. This includes the animated Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, alongside an untitled live-action series still in development.
While speaking with Variety, Wolfhard recollected how he managed to guess the Duffer Brothers’ plans for a Stranger Things spinoff, having thought of the same idea on his own. He revealed more details about the hypothetical spinoff, specifically comparing it to Twin Peaks. He also says the idea wouldn’t mention the original show and be structured like an anthology series:
Like David Lynch’s ‘Twin Peaks.’ Sort of an anthology and different tones but similar universe or same universe. I think set in different places and all tied together through this mythology of the Upside Down. Don’t even talk about Hawkins. Don’t have any mention of our characters. They were toying around with ideas in case Netflix wanted them. I’m sure they do, and I’m sure it will happen, but there’s nothing official. I think the coolest way, the way that I would do it, there has to be labs everywhere. If there was one in Hawkins, there’s one in Russia. Where else could they be?
What Wolfhard’s Stranger Things Spinoff Idea Says About The Franchise’s Future
Wolfhard first spoke about his Stranger Things spinoff idea in 2023 during an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he revealed the Duffer Brothers told him not to talk about his idea because it matched theirs. However, at the time, it was unclear what direction the spinoff was planned to go and how both series would connect.
With this new information, though, it clarifies a spinoff that doesn’t mention Hawkins or other characters in Stranger Things, instead focusing on the Upside Down’s influence over the wider world. For Wolfhard, this includes a deeper exploration of Russia. Though it’s unclear if this in particular would be the setting of a new spinoff show, it would be fitting.
So far, the only information available about the series’ expansion is the upcoming Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 animated series. The live-action show is still being developed, but Wolfhard’s statement could offer some insight into their plans. But, as he says the idea isn’t official, they could also be moving in a different direction with the announced series.
Our Take On Wolfhard’s Stranger Things Spinoff Idea
If the upcoming Stranger Things spinoff were to embrace Wolfhard’s ideas, the new series could expand greatly on what the original show has already established. The Upside Down is ripe for exploration through various lenses, whether it’s in the US, Russia, or somewhere else. An anthology series with Twin Peaks-like elements would be very fitting for the franchise’s continuation.
However, there’s no guarantee this is how the show plays out. For now, it sounds like the future of Stranger Things will officially remain under wraps until the live-action spinoff is further along in development. Perhaps some of Wolfhard’s predictions and the Duffer Brothers’ original plans will make it into the final product when it arrives.
