The Loom App Review: Vintage Blazer Redesign into a Co-Ord | Roberta Lee

AD | If you own beautiful, high-quality or vintage pieces – like a blazer you no longer wear – The Loom App offers a way to redesign them rather than replace them. Redesigning my clothes has been a life long joy of mine, so when Loom reached out to collaborate with me – I could only think of one project: a vintage blazer co=ord..

It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time – but I since I lack the technical skills to do it – so the project has remained just an idea. Loom’s network of designers meant I could be matched with the most suitable person for the job, as well as having designers reach out to me offering to help and pitch their own ideas.

This review features a gifted service from Loom. Alongside this collaboration, I have personally paid to have my own pieces redesigned – as well as commissioning redesign work for my clients. As with all my reviews, this reflects my honest, first-hand experience after many months of testing. My opinions remain completely independent and are based on the experience and quality of the finished pieces.

The LOOM App — and What They Actually Do

The Loom App is a UK-based platform that connects individuals with independent designers and makers to help them redesign their wardrobe. Rather than shopping for something new, you post a brief. A designer responds. You collaborate. The piece is reworked.

It isn’t alterations in the traditional sense. Although you can have alterations and repairs done. Think of Loom as a garment transformation service.

The platform was created to address something many of us recognise: wardrobes full of quality pieces that no longer feel aligned. Instead of discarding them, or replacing them Loom offers us a way to redesign what we already own.

The designers on the platform range from pattern cutters and tailors to emerging fashion designers. The work can be subtle or structural, depending on the brief.

In my case, the project moved well beyond tailoring. We deconstructed a vintage wool blazer and rebuilt it as a co-ord. That level of redesign requires skill, fittings, and ongoing collaboration.

Loom sits somewhere between traditional tailoring and commissioning something bespoke. It bridges the gap between traditional tailoring and commissioning something bespoke.

The brief I uploaded to the Loom App

I had a vintage red wool blazer which I wanted to be redesigned into a more dramatic cropped blazer, with a corset-style or bandeau top with a matching bow for my hair. I uploaded a moodboard and my desired outcomes.

An overview of the blazer redesign project

  • This required a full garment redesign, not standard tailoring or alterations.
  • The process involved multiple fittings and in-person collaborative sessions in London
  • The desired outcome was to created multiple wearable combinations, not a single outfit
  • Redesign proved more satisfying than replacing the piece entirely – because I got exactly what I wanted (and the perfect fit).

Why Rework and Redesign a Vintage Blazer?

Most of my wardrobe sits comfortably in a refined, classic space. That works for everyday life. I love investing in high-quality vintage blazers, but one I purchased didn’t work for me. The shape, The excess material.

Replacing it felt unnecessary. So I got creative and imagined: What could this become?

I chose to rework this specific vintage blazer because the quality, finish, construction, and material were far superior to many new blazers on the market today.

What I was decided was missing in my wardrobe was a statement co-ord.
Something I could wear for work, or social occasions but also for moments that require more presence – like industry events, public-facing work, or attending a show at London Fashion Week…

This blazer had so much excess material that if it were just cropped – more than half of it would be wasted. It had to be a 2-piece.

I tend to lean into a classic, yet dramatic elements for big nights. I wanted to redesign this blazer with sharper proportions and a little more tension. Something cropped, with bigger shoulder pads. My style is very classic, with a modern edge and that’s what my dramatic archetype was seeking. So this is what we focused on first, cropping the blazer and making the shoulders, and overall shape more pronounced.

The Blazer Redesign Idea

The idea was clear from the beginning. I wanted to crop the blazer and rebuild the remaining fabric into a top. What kind of top was uclear to me as I had no clear idea what could be made with the remaining fabric.

  • A cropped blazer that could add some drama layered over a dress, or worn alone pined by a brooch layered over a bodysuit.
  • A corset-style bandeau, cut from the remaining section of the blazer.
  • A matching bow, depending on how much material remained.

I knew exactly how I wanted wear it

  • With a long maxi skirt
  • With a flared pair of jeans
  • With my wide leg trousers
  • With a mini skirt, knee high boots and tights in winter
  • The corset layered over a crisp white shirt

For me, this wasn’t about creating just one single outfit. I wanted to ensure the co-ord could adapt to existing items in my wardrobe. Part of the joy of redesigning my wardrobe is discovering more ways to style what I already own. There’s a real sense of luxury being able to redesign your clothes and have them fit your body and lifestyle.

Working With LOOM to Redesign my blazer

I posted the brief and worked closely with their designers to refine the concept. The process was collaborative and intentionally slow — testing proportions, adjusting structure, stepping away, and returning with fresh eyes. In total, the redesign involved over five fittings, alongside travel in and out of London.

It’s worth saying plainly: this isn’t a swap for fast fashion. It’s a process you invest in. It takes time and money to redesign your wardrobe – but it’s worth it. Having pieces that nobody else has, that are made just for you is a real treat – a luxury that surpasses the feeling of buying new.

The time and attention show in the final result. Nothing feels compromised. And importantly, it feels like me – and that it belongs in my wardrobe.

Redesigning is the new Luxury

I’m careful with the word luxury.

For me, it isn’t about newness or excess.
It’s about relevance, quality, craftsmanship, personalisation, a unique experience.

This blazer redesign project is a great example of how I work with my clients. I discover untapped potential in their wardrobes and help redesign pieces that deserve a new life. That ongoing relationship with a piece, the stories told and lived – rather than an outfit only being enjoyed for a single occasion — creating new memories without losing the old ones, is why I love redesigning clothes. It’s not for everyone, its certainly not fast or frivolous when done well and with intention.

Is USing Loom to redesign your wardrobe Worth the Investment?

If you’re looking for a fast fashion fix, redesigning your wardrobe using experienced designers and specialists isn’t cheap. It’s better to learn how to DIY your clothes if you aren’t in a position to invest. If you already own high-quality pieces that no longer reflect how you show up, and don’t want to part with them for sentimental reasons redesign can make far more sense than starting again.

My experience working with Loom to bring this blazer co-ord to life has been genuinely positive. The collaborative nature of creating something bespoke feels incredibly special. Its a win win relationship – I see the potential in clothes, and loom matches my creative vision with the technical expertise needed to bring my design ideas to life.
