There are immeasurableย barriers to shifting our current corruptย fashionย industryย to a sustainable and sociallyย equitableย system. Theseย barriers come in all differentย shapes and sizes ranging from unbalanced business models, a lack of time in an ever-faster industry cycle, paralysing eco-anxiety and business-as-usualย mindsets. As practitionersย within fashion and sustainability,ย the Knowledgeย Exchangeย team are faced with tacklingย these industryย barriersย and finding ways to work through them toย beย aย catalyst of change with our industry collaborators.ย ย

In ourย partnershipsย with fashion brands, we set out to raiseย awarenessย of sustainabilityย concepts, ideate innovativeย solutions,ย and fosterย a shiftย in the industry. In theseย collaborations we seeย creative and progressive ideas andย meet inspiringย and passionateย sustainabilityย practitioners.ย However,ย we also see the microย and macro barriersย that mean thatย aย radical and necessary shift is not happening.ย ย

For the CSF: Imagining Possibilities Festival,ย we wanted to create a uniqueย space for our sustainability peers in UKย fashionย companiesย to face these immense issues with equally immenseย ideas.ย We wanted them to acknowledgeย the industryโ€™s faults,ย butย put theseย aside and instead collectively explore revolutionary ideas to unlock potential.ย The workshop enabled participants to relieveย their mindย of the fashion status quo that serves as a barrier to progression.ย ย

Toย do this,ย we created a workshop to reimagineย the fashion industry into a completely new paradigm inย anย alternative world. ย Participants confronted ourย current hierarchical systems,ย set aside the barriers to change and contemplatedย the journeyย towards planetaryย equilibrium. Weย exploredย the work of Donna Harrawayโ€™s Children of Compostย and usedย her Speculative Fabulationย approach to create individual fashion systems based on participantsโ€™ย own values. ย Theย workshop usedย an explorative building exercise and discussion to create an environment for exploration, imaginationย and hope. In the exerciseย there was a seriesย of questions to help designย andย create holisticย and realistic worlds. ย

As aย result,ย everyone createdย a new fashion system set in an alternativeย world. The fashion systemsย were designed with their own, visual language, fibre cultivationย methods, productย life cyclesย and cultural fashion practice. These systemsย wereย situated in theirย fully realisedย worlds with theirย ownย valueย systems, economies, infrastructure, government structures, culturesย and aestheticsย that supported the fashion system. Together we shared our new visions with each other.ย Theseย wildly variedย within themes including technology, aestheticsย and operations howeverย they did all haveย similarities.ย ย

In every world and fashion system there were fourย common aspects. They were…ย

  • Localism โ€“ everyย universe had theirย fashion system embeddedย into local culture, practiceย and infrastructure.ย ย

  • Overconsumptionย and productionย โ€“ were addressedย in every world, with allย reducingย to responsibleย levels. ย

  • Nature โ€“ย they all had a strong connection to the environment.ย Natureย was imperative to the success of the world and its value.ย ย

  • Equity โ€“ they all shared themes of socialย fairnessย that were embeddedย throughoutย the valueย chain of fashion.ย ย

We did not ask participantsย to createย the most sustainable or ethical systemย possible.ย We onlyย asked them to designย a fashionย systemย in line with theirย own values, beliefs, imaginationย andย expertise.ย As a result,ย we got a wide range of diverse visions,ย all with theย necessaryย ingredientsย to create aย functional and resilientย fashion system.ย

As part of Centre for Sustainable Fashionโ€™s (CSF) LCF Fashion Undressed: Imagining Possibilities Festivalย earlier this year, CSF's Knowledge Exchange Associate Constance Jeffreysย developed and hosted Workshopping a New Fashion System, with support fromย the Knowledge Exchange team.ย

Going forward, we have developed this into a workshop series called Shifting to Shift. ย In the series this workshop sits between one on finding hopeย in the climate crisisย and aย road mappingย workshop for theย future. ย These workshops are designed to support brands in taking more radical and practical steps towards a more sustainable future.ย We hope the impact of the workshop series results in more confident, imaginativeย and decisiveย action in the faceย of climate injustice. ย

As an industry, we need to use radical imagination, speculative design and world building to give us the confidence to shift to a new, unknown, fashion paradigm. Together we can work towards a hopeful future,ย rather than workingย blindly away from an unfit-for-purpose fashion industry. We should see through the man-madeย barriers to change, and instead seeing the infinite possibilities that a new world could hold for us.ย
